Black Knight Sword – Launch Trailer

From the creators of Sine Mora comes a retro-themed download that looks like Monty Python and plays like Castlevania. Diving into Suda 51′s latest bizarre creation, it’s no big shocker to find Black Knight Sword steeped in abundant freaky style and general weirdness.

Stabbing microwaves until they spew fountains of beating human hearts, purchasing power-ups from a giant talking eyeball with six mouths, and battling against a two-story wolf beast with the demonic face of Jim Morrison is all par for the course in this odd fantasy platformer. But despite all the “WTF” craziness each stage throws at you, it’s disappointing the same level of creativity isn’t found in the gameplay itself.

Played as a warped puppet show in a grim fairytale world, Black Knight Sword’s platforming adventure takes place on a persistent stage in front of a virtual audience that applauds your victories and groans at your failures. Narrated in real-time by an ever-present commentator, the tale unfolds with a suicide. You’ve hanged yourself, but your body reanimates and merges with an ominous suit of armor powered by a sword spirit who’s hell-bent on ridding the land of a beautiful princess with murderous tendencies.

From there (I know – you’re thinking, “Only from there?”) the quest immediately runs full-speed into the deep end as you venture through mysterious landscapes and battle their macabre inhabitants, ranging from deformed bags of exploding pus to giant fire-breathing chickens.

Inventive storytelling blends with some of the most bizarre sights you’ll experience in a 2D platformer to make Black Knight Sword a real gem on the presentation front. It’s deliciously weird from start to finish, but that weirdness only partially distracts from the repetitious, uninspiring gameplay and brutal difficulty. For a game that’s so strongly unique, Black Knight Sword sadly bleeds out much of its charm through a few gaping flaws.
